Open University
For first class undergraduate and postgraduate courses in UK and all over the world. Now rather expensive - but financial help available (especially to non-graduates).
Poole Universty of the Third Age
This website gives a good idea of the wide range of Poole u3a activities. Some, like ours, are continuing on-line in the virus emergency
Free On-line Philosophy Courses
This is a list of free on-line philosophy course on the openculture web site which also has many other educational on-line resources in Politics, Philosophy & other subjects.
WEA
The WEA (the Workers Educational Association) is an excellent provider of part-time short non-examination educational courses for all adults. As of mid 2021 there were no face-to-face Politics or Philosophy courses available locally but some tempting offerings on-line.
Bournemouth u3a
Bournemouth u3a has a Philosophy group meeting in 2020/21. Other local u3a groups are also to be found in the major towns and some villages and suburbs in Dorset.
Oxford University Continuing Education
Currently (December 2019) 66 Philosophy and 96 Politics offerings including some on-line. Introductory Politics on-line course has Tansey & Jackson as required reading!
Southampton University Lifelong Learning
Southampton's Lifelong Learning Programme is on a limited scale - but has some interesting offerings including the Philosophy Cafe and Politics Study Days. You can also take a first degree in Philosophy or Philosophy & English on a part-time basis. The Philosophy Department hosts a series of open seminars sponsored by the Royal Institute of Philosophy - but these are often quite technical.
Bournemouth University
The Media School has an innovative full time undergraduate course in Politics with emphasis on modern media, and postgraduate courses on Political Psychology and International Political Communications. At first degree level Politics can also be combined with Law, Sociology or Economics. There are is no Philosophy or Extra-Mural Department - but the Annual Festival of Learning is worth investigating.
Future Learn
Free Massive Open On-line Courses (MOOC) from British and overseas Universities - I enjoyed Exeter's course on Empire. More internet courses and lectures can be found on You Tube, iTunesu, AcademicEarth, Coursera, EdX and Udacity.

Philosophy

More Changes to U3A Poole Philosophy Workshop schedule are on this site - the latest change was on 24th. November. The schedule is subject to amendment and is often revised.

Please check on this site to ensure you have the latest version.

We are now meeting once more mainly in person in each other's homes or gardens (but with some participation over Zoom). Let Steve know if you wish to participate via Zoom.

Please let the designated host know that you are coming to each session, so appropriate preparations can be made.

You should be double vaccinated, have carried out a Rapid Antigen Test in the previous week, and, of course, not attend if you feel in any way unwell - or have been 'pinged' or otherwise told to isolate.

On 1st of December we shall be deciding on our book for next term.

Politics

Politics

According to the Good Reads website, there are two Persian editions of Politics: the Basics - they were not authorised by us and hence we cannot say how accurate they are!

Politics the Basics was sixth on Amazon's list of Government and Politics References Best Sellers on 4th November 2020.

A Turkish Edition of Politics the Basics (5th. ed.) is to be published by Utopya Yayinevi.

A Portuguese translation of Politics: the Basics has now been published in Brazil as Polίtica, Editora Saraiva, Sao Paulo, 1st Brazilian ed., 2016.

The Fifth Edition of Politics: the Basics was published by Routledge in September  2014.

Nigel has updated the book and has made some interesting innovations.

If you run a class which might use the book, let us know using the feedback button on this site and we will arrange to send you a free inspection copy.

The fourth edition of Politics: the Basics has been published in  Arabic by the Arab Network for Publishing and Research based in Beirut, Lebanon.

Politics: The Basics, 4th Edition is to be translated by Jiangsu People's Publishing Ltd into Chinese (simplified) for distribution in Mainland China.

Conservative MP Steve Baker puts Politics: the Basics first on his recommended reading list for newcomers to the Conservative Candidates List.
